Current plan moves 297 Porter Ridge ­students to Piedmont and Sun Valley clusters

If the latest student reassignment proposal for the ­Porter Ridge school cluster is adopted, 297 students will change schools before classes start in August, potentially saving the district an estimated $432,000.

Members of the Family Career and Community Leaders of America group, the students have spent months cultivating a grassroots effort to benefit 5-year-old Rachel Page, who last year was ­diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Providence Spring Elementary School students rolled up their sleeves, tied on some aprons and got busy preparing more than 3,000 turkey and cheese and ham and cheese sandwiches to include in the 1,500 bag lunches they assembled for nonprofit The Urban Ministries Center. Students arrived at 7 a.m.
