No new Catholic churches planned for Union’s 12K parishoners, Charlotte churches step up to serve them

According to Roman Catholic ­Diocese of Charlotte pastoral reports, in 2000 there were nearly 12,000 ­Catholics ­living in Union County. That number has only grown in the last decade. And yet there’s only one Union County Catholic parish – Our Lady of Lourdes in ­Monroe – with no others planned because there’s no available staff.

African Storytelling enriches Indian Trail community

African storytellers Obakunle Akinlana and April Turner lifted their voices in joyous song and spun enchanting Nigerian folktales Feb. 16 to an enthralled audience of children and adults celebrating Black History Month at Union West Regional Library in Indian Trail. And amid the festivities an impromptu band was christened – the Indian Trail Last-Minute African Band.
